A 20-seater open-roof bus that covers the same core and buffer zones as the Gypsy, at a lower seat price — built for families, groups, and anyone who'd rather split one vehicle than book three jeeps.
A bigger ride for a bigger group
The Canter is an open-roof bus with bench seating for around 20 passengers, run by the same forest department system as the Gypsy. It's the option most families with school-age kids, extended groups, and college trips end up booking, mainly because one Canter replaces three or four Gypsies at a much lower per-head cost.
You lose some of the flexibility — the driver can't always pull off the track for a longer, quieter wait the way a smaller jeep can — but you're on the same forest roads, in the same zones, looking for the same tigers, with a naturalist guide narrating the drive from the front of the bus.

Canter or Gypsy — how they actually differ
Both vehicles run the same zones, same timings, and same guide system. The real differences come down to group size, cost, and how close the vehicle can get to a sighting.

Zones open to Canter safaris
Canters run in eight of Ranthambhore's ten zones. Zones 7 and 8 are narrower, jeep-only tracks and aren't allotted to the larger vehicle.
Zone 1 & 2
Open to Canter. Runs past the base of Ranthambhore Fort and Jogi Mahal, with regular langur and peacock sightings along the way.
Zone 3, 4 & 5
Open to Canter. Covers the lake belt — Padam Talao, Rajbagh, Malik Talao — where water draws wildlife through the dry months too.
Highest sighting chanceZone 7 & 8
Not allotted to Canter. These narrower buffer tracks are reserved for Gypsy permits only.
Gypsy onlyZone 6, 9 & 10
Open to Canter. Wider buffer zones, quieter on the track, good for leopard, sloth bear, and birdlife.
Canter safari pricing
Canter fares are set by the Rajasthan Forest Department and booked per seat — there's no option to reserve the whole bus. The rate covers entry fee, vehicle charge, and guide fee together.

A few things worth knowing
Carry your ID
A government photo ID matching the e-permit is mandatory for every seat, including children.
Dress in muted tones
Olive, khaki, brown or grey. Bright colours and white stand out against the dry forest.
Keep the bus quiet
Twenty people talking at once is the fastest way to lose a sighting — let the guide call it.
Stay seated throughout
No standing on the bench seats or leaning over the open sides while the bus is moving.
How Canter seats get booked
Canter permits go through the same forest department portal as the Gypsy, just booked by the seat instead of by the vehicle.
Pick date & shift
Slots open roughly 90 days ahead. Weekend and winter dates for zones 3–5 go first.
Book by the seat
Add each traveller's name and ID number — every seat on the Canter is booked and paid for individually.
Pay & confirm
Payment locks your zone and shift. Seats aren't transferable to a different date once confirmed.
Print & report
Download the e-permit, carry a printout plus ID, and report at the assigned gate 30 minutes before the shift.
